During the 64th Festival de Cannes, Europe also celebrated 20 years of the MEDIA program. Since its launch in 1991, the MEDIA program has been a huge success story, helping bring many superb films to the screen, including more than a dozen Oscar and Palme d’Or winners. The support of the MEDIA program has become indispensable for professionals in the sector, witness the strong presence of works supported by MEDIA at this 64th Festival de Cannes: 20 films, including 8 competitors for the Palme d’or.
The European Commissioner for Culture, Androulla Vassiliou, for this solemn celebration invited 20 most prominent European film directors. Arunas Matelis, the famous Lithuanian film director, was also in attendance for this special event. Among 20 European directors there was Theo Angelopoulos, Jaco Van Dormael, Costa-Gavras, Michael Radford, Radu Mihaileanu and Paolo Sorrentino. All 20 film directors took part in meetings to outline the future of the Media program.
2011 was a great success for Lithuanian filmmakers participating in MEDIA program. The latest documentary project by Arunas Matelis ‘Gladiators. The Different World’ not only received partial support, but also was recognized as the best documentary project of the year (according to the MEDIA ranking) and had an opportunity for MEDIA Talent award. We are also glad that ‘Uljana Kim’s Studio’ recieved partial support for films’ package. This package consists of Kristijonas Vildziunas’ motion film ‘Three Friends and Others’, Arunas Matelis’ motion film debut ‘Odysey. R. and J.’ and Audrius Stonys documentary ‘Under the Roots of Oak’.
